It is a custom for all Vipassana course centers to be named in Pali, the ancient language spoken by Buddha and preserved through buddhist teachings. The Pali meaning of Dhamma Sumeru is “the heavenly
mountain of Dhamma”. It is nestled in the Swiss Jura Mountains, on Mount-Soleil
– “Mount Sun” – which is one of the sunniest places in Switzerland.

Sumeru is the first and only Vipassana center in Switzerland, opening its doors
in 1999. It was built as a hotel in 1904 and later became a holiday camp for children before being bought over by the Swiss Vipassana Association. It may also be one of the smallest
course centers in Europe. Current capacity is about 40 students, including both males and
females.

Expansion
is underway behind with the new meditation hall and teachers quarters opening
soon. The new building is mainly built of wood, a wonderful creamy, warm coloured wood. The
Vipassana Association chose wood because apparently, it’s faster to build.
